my littlest one

My littlest one turned 3 today. Bittersweet for his mama, I no longer have a toddler, technically speaking. He’s in his big boy bed, potty trained, growing like a weed, and talking a mile a minute. This totally imperfect shot captures his impish little spirit perfectly  to me. Happy birthday dear one. I wish you’d stay little forever. We love you loads!

one|august

August was busy and so much fun – and the majority of what I shot was on film so we won’t be seeing those for a while  🙂  I have a feeling my favorite “One” from August is sitting in the lab in some chemicals still waiting to reveal itself to me. Part of the fun of film. This month, we spent a lot of time in Michigan, soaking in the sun, playing in the water, and spending as much time outside enjoying the summer days as we could. No television, no internet, just fresh air, water, bonfires, and good buddies and family to hang out with. Going off the grid every once in a while is pretty good for the soul.

Those of you not from the Chicago area have probably not heard or seen any ads from the “Pure Michigan” campaign. Narrated by Tim Allen and really pure genius, one gets better than the next and they perfectly describe the little slice of heaven that Michigan can be to those of us who know it well.  Each one makes you want to drop everything and jump in your car to get up there as fast as possible.

I shot only a few digital images while we were “Up North” at All Seasons Resort. Here is one that captures a cute little moment, my boys and some of their buddies checking out a bluegill that was caught earlier in the day. That poor little bluegill must have gotten picked up a hundred times. A little bit of Pure Michigan.

  • Kim - Jess – perfection! The texture of the water, the bridge, their excitement. I love it. And yep, I’ve heard the Pure Michigan ads so maybe the span is wider than predicted!ReplyCancel

I recently did a series of mini sessions on Belle Isle in Detroit. You’d never guess it by looking at these, but there was a pretty threatening looking thunderstorm rolling in on one side of the island. It was also insanely hot and humid. Everyone was so great, total troopers! This is sweet little C and his mom and dad. Such a sweet little guy.

silver beach|film

So if you should ever find yourself in the little corner of Heaven known as southwestern Michigan, I highly suggest visiting the adorable town of St. Joseph and Silver Beach. It’s a great beach with a great playground and all sorts of other fun stuff nearby. On this particular day, even though it looks overcast, it was about 96 degrees in the shade and roughly 160% humidity by my estimation.  I got a little brave and was more than waist deep in the lake with my trusty little EOS3 film camera.  A few times it did get a little wet when a big wave would hit me while I was trying to get low down and to water level…but it’s the least expensive (and maybe most fun) of all of my gear by a longshot so I have fun with it.

These are a mix of two different film stocks, Fuji Pro 400 and Kodak Portra 400, and I am becoming a huge fan of the latter. Developed and scanned by Indie Film Lab.
