self portrait | film

So I’m not much of a self portrait person as evidenced by this shot. This is about as good as it gets…do you see me?

I took a similar shot with my phone for Instagram, and then decided to grab my film camera to do it again. Looking forward to this view when we go back to the cabin in August.

shop dogs | film

When you are a photographer you find yourself doing some slightly irrational things. Like making your husband take you back to the liquor store you passed a few times on the way to the lake cabin because you noticed the cutest dogs standing guard.

This happens to me a lot: I’ll see some trees in some particularly fabulous light as I drive by, or I’ll notice an interesting structure I had overlooked before. I make a mental note, think about it, and figure out when to go back to shoot it. Sometimes I’ll even grab some iPhone shots just to remember the place and then I can plan on getting back around to it. I know many of my photographer friends do this same kind of thing.

In this instance I came back to the store late in the afternoon with my film camera. I love shooting summer scenes with film. There’s something timeless about summer and the same goes for film. These dogs just hung around on this porch all day from what I could tell, maybe picking their heads up if someone came by. Mostly snoozing. I’m hoping to see these rascals again this year when we head up to the cabins in northern Michigan…

It’s the end of one month and the beginning of another which means that it is time for our happy little blog circle…lots going on in June. In fact, I finally have a lot of pictures to choose from. Much different than the winter doldrums where I barely pick up my camera.

This month was special for our blog circle group because we had our second meet up – this time, going to visit Stacey in fabulous New York City. Not only did we get to enjoy the city, the food, the people watching, etc., we got to meet the newest member of the Vukelj family in person. We all got some good snuggle time in with sweet little Miss Baby A. Such a great time all the way around. I think it would be impossible for us to have anything but a great time together.

I’ve been to NYC a handful of times, but it’s been quite a while. This was also my first trip back since I’ve been more serious about photography. You’d never know that though because I didn’t take nearly as many shots as I thought I did. Or should have. Oh well, I’m relying on the other girls here to fill in the gaps! I will be posting more from my trip soon, but for this month I’m choosing somewhat of a random shot that I took in Central Park. I literally shot this one from the hip, or the side of my leg really, and for some reason I came back around to it a few times when I was editing. There are a lot of dogs in Chicago, and I was sort of enchanted with just how many I saw in NY. They’re everywhere.

I hope you follow me to Texas to see what my dear friend Adele has been up to (other than having fun with us in NYC of course)…and continue to click the links to see what everyone in our circle has to show for the month. Until next month – I hope you are having a fabulous summer!

i heart faces photo challenge | all boy

Since I have two boys as do most of my friends and family, I had to enter a shot into the I Heart Faces “All Boy” Photo Challenge. This is a shot of two cousins, the sons of dear friends of mine, taken along the shore of Lake Michigan.

It’s blog circle time again! Earlier this month, we had a fantastic trip to Florida. Much needed sunshine after months of cold and snow. Charlie figured out how to swim underwater all on his own, and spend the majority of each day in the pool. He was so excited about it, and I was able to photograph him underwater thanks to a birthday gift I had just received from my family, an underwater camera! I had just about as much fun as Charlie had swimming playing around with my new camera. It’s a lot of fun, and shoots video so I was able to get videos of him swimming also. boy swimming underwater floridaAnd I’m breaking the rules this month and posting another (such a rebel)! Sometimes the best camera is the one that you have with you. I decided to leave my dslr and fancy lenses at home this year when we went to the beach. Normally I wrap it up super carefully in about 3 layers of stuff and have to babysit it the entire time. Yes, I can get some great shots (and I love beach shots!) but it’s also a pain. This year, I brought just this same little point and shoot that I was using underwater. It did a decent job on land as well and was stress-free! boys on beach siesta key florida Next, click here to catch a glimpse of what my multi-talented friend Krista has been up to on Bainbridge Island this month! I always love her captures of her family life on the island.

  • my photography gear - Jessica Remus Photography - […] 3. Olympus TG-3 Waterproof 16 MP Digital Camera. I really wanted something I could use underwater but didn’t want to spend the almost $2K I’d need to on an underwater housing for my dslr. This camera is so much fun! It shoots still and video underwater or above, and I chose it specifically because you can adjust settings manually. It has a pretty wide aperture for a point and shoot: going down to f/2. That wide aperture is important for getting enough light in while shooting underwater. It’s the perfect beach camera because sand and water can get all over it and it’s no problem. And my kids can drop it (which they have) and it’s all good. All of my underwater shots, and some of my beach shots are taken with this camera. You can see some of these shots here and here.
