St. Joseph, Michigan has some great stuff to do for little kids. We love going to Silver Beach in the summer, a really fun beach on the shores of Lake Michigan. And there is a ton of stuff right there for kids – playgrounds, splash pads, children’s museum, indoor carousel, and a yummy pizza place that’s right on the train tracks. So, for train obsessed little boys, the trains going by are an added bonus.
Some shots from our recent, very chilly visit:
All three of my munchkins in a rare moment of not squirming. Or truth be told, my shutter speed was just really fast! The boys are so in love with their baby sister, she’s a joy for us all.
Okay so, I always said I’d never attempt a 365 project. Or at least if I didn’t say it out loud, I have thought it. I’ve always wanted to do one, but knew that I’d have a lot of trouble keeping up with it. And then you just wind up feeling defeated, and it backfires and you start shooting even less. A 365 – for those new to the concept – is a photography project where you take/edit a photo every day for a year.
Sounds simple, but…for those of us who still have images from summer vacation 2013 on our hard drives still waiting to be edited, maybe not so much. For those of us who are kind of sort of perfectionists, it’s even harder. We stop taking snapshots because we find too much wrong with them.
But.
I really enjoy shooting everyday life the most. And I have really gotten away from that. Two energetic boys, a crazy dog, a full time research position, a photography business, and a pregnancy (!) all going on at once zapped me totally of all of my creative energy (and energy in general). And that, my friends, bummed me out. I haven’t even shot film in a long time and that was something I really enjoyed doing for my personal work.
And so it begins. I am excited to get back behind the camera more often again – digital and film. Experimenting and taking shots as is, documenting much more of my everyday life. I don’t want to miss a thing in my baby girl’s first year of life. I am going to go easy on myself and try to shoot daily, but edit in batches so I don’t drive myself nuts. I’m not going to hold myself to this if life gets in the way, but I’m hoping to try to do as much as I can to document my 2015. Here goes nothing!
Here’s week 1:

4/365 | top of the hancock building

The rule was you had to be five years old. Five years old and up, and you could go to the circus with my grandfather (Papa). My brother was the oldest, a full four years old than me, so he had the pleasure of going solo for several years there. But then once we came of age, me and my cousins weren’t far behind and we became quite the group.
One other rule: you could pick out one souvenir. But my cousin Dean found a loophole: Papa didn’t consider all of the food and drinks that the vendors walked around with souvenirs, so he would order one of everything. Cotton candy, popcorn, sno-cones, you name it. And then he’d puke. Every year. My brother almost always got a big circus poster. My younger cousins got the light up “whirligigs” as we called them, and I always got a stuffed elephant, horse, zebra, big cat – some form of an animal. No surprise there.
This year my dad and I brought my boys to see the same circus. Lucky Nate – he’s only four! Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey always swings through Chicago in November. That part is the same. It brought back so many fond memories.
Some things have changed, it’s now in the United Center instead of the old Chicago Stadium where it was when I was small (the Chicago Stadium no longer exists). Papa used to take us to this totally tiny, seedy hot dog joint prior to the circus which even as a kid I thought “this really isn’t a place for kids it seems kinda sketchy” – it was such an adventure. Thinking about it now that I’m a parent, I can’t believe he took all of us. Quite the undertaking.
It was so fun to watch my boys watching the show – their eyes were huge and they were basically stunned silent for quite a while. Professional cameras weren’t allowed so I had to do what I could with my little Olympus point and shoot, and then sadly the batteries died about 15 minutes into the show! I was hoping to get lion tamer pictures but no such luck. Here are a few from our trip starting with the obligatory whirligig purchase:
New year, new baby, new website…(website still under construction, to be finished soon!)
Hard to believe that 2014 is drawing to a close, it went by so fast. I found out I was pregnant with baby #3 in early February 2014, the best Valentine’s Day gift ever. In June I was thrilled to find out I was having a girl. Baby B was born early on October 6, 2014, the very first girl in this generation of kids on both sides of our family!
My last shot of this year is technical garbage shot in near darkness very early in the morning, but it’s one from the heart. What this blog circle is all about. My bed has a new occupant most mornings, and she’s so sweet she even smiles in her sleep. She’s the biggest highlight and change of 2014 and I love waking up and seeing that little face. Her brothers always come rushing in as soon as they wake up to see “are her eyes open?”. Best part of my day.
Now please click here to follow me to Colorado to see what my amazing friend Sarah has been up to in December. I’m so glad to be continuing this blog circle with this fabulous group of ladies, who are each so special to me. Thanks for following us and we hope to see you in 2015! Cheers!
